DRAFT LETTER TO PREMIER GORDON CAMPBELL, MINISTER OF ATTORNEY GENERAL MIKE de JONG, AND MINISTER OF FINANCE COLIN HANSEN

MM/DD/YYYY

Honourable Gordon Campbell, Premier
Honourable Colin Hansen, Minister of Finance
Honourable Michael de Jong, Attorney General
c/o Rm 156, West Annex
Parliament Buildings
Victoria, BC V8V 1X4

Dear Premier and Ministers,

I am writing to urge you to immediately reverse the cuts you are making to legal aid in BC, to fully restore funding, and to allow the regional legal aid centres to remain open. These cuts restrict access to justice for the most vulnerable and impoverished in our society.

Because you have cut funding and services and are closing the regional legal aid centres, fewer British Columbians will have access to the quality legal help they need, at a time when more and more people need these services.

I am one of the 97 per cent of British Columbians who believe in the principle of equal access to justice for all. It’s time to demonstrate that this principle is a priority for this government, as the Ministry's Service Plan indicates.

I urge you to immediately restore and increase the provincial grant to the Legal Services Society, and direct the society to re-open the regional centres that are scheduled to close, so that all British Columbians have equal access to justice.

I look forward to receiving a response from each of you.

Sincerely,
